Yogasana -The mermaid
The most striking of all the yogasanas has to be The
Mermaid.
The mermaid pose is the advanced version of the The King
Pigeon pose.
This pose strides out confidently, elegantly and gracefully,
displaying robust strength,
like a steely ship steadfastly cleaving the gigantic waves
as it passes.
In this pose the body rests vertically erect,
firmly on the two thighs stretch oppositely in line forward
and backward with the hips squared.
The front leg is arched back on the mat with the foot
straightened, close to the groin.
The rear leg is bent back upwards with the foot pointing
towards the head.
The arm above the front thigh is stretched vertically
upwards
close to the head with the elbow bent and the hand pointing
backwards.
The other arm is stretched right backwards
in line with the elbow bent and the hand towards the head.
The two hands finally join with the fingers of both hands
locked,
the front hand above the left hand.
The back foot is nestled on the inside of the elbow of the
back arm.
The whole body thus is clasped with the head vertically
erect, facing ahead.
And this is the status of the magnificent mermaid pose.
That the mermaid pose is an advanced version of the King
Pigeon pose
highlights the difficulty of attaining it.
There are proper steps to be taken and to be followed
correctly;
and regular practice leads towards perfection.
Nevertheless the practicing of this Mermaid Pose regularly
does benefit the body physically,
making it fit and healthy.
Such benefits can be seen from the way the body is
exercised.
Every part of the body acts, flexible and in balance.
The shoulders are squared with the chest flexed and
expanded,
the lower back arched, the knees bent, the legs
straightened, and the hands clasped.
And all the while the bones – the neck, the spine, the
pelvis and all those of the limbs do their work.
When all the body parts are flexible and the body in balance
maintaining such a pose
it has to be healthy and naturally fit.
