Blessed

Hi,

If you are lucky, fortunate, blessed, happy .....
and you know it, clap your hands !

A fellow golfer wore an expensive sports shirt, but a week later he said that he had dumped it because it looked cheap. Another man was beaming with joy as he narrated that he had chanced on a vendor at the market selling four singlets for ten dollars; immediately he bought eight of them; they had logos of Adidas, Nike, Guess, and others.

Reflecting on this, I can also recall many occasions where little events gave me reasons to feel happy and blessed too. During my rounds in our housing estates shopping centres to get a feel of the milieu, I have often chanced upon favourable timely opportunities. I often wondered why I chose to go there at that time, or it was that I was intuitively urged to do so.

There was a time I wanted to view a certain movie which I had missed. Then for some curious reasons I had this urge to visit the Salvation Army thrift store, and there was this movie VCD, selling for four dollars for any three VCDs. It was the first time I visited this store.

Another time, certain aspects of the stock market intrigued me. One day, just on an impulse, I went to this corner of the book shop, and there was this book with the apt title staring at me.

On the internet, I was always impressed with all the wonderful and beautiful Powerpoint shows that were emailed around. One day a colleague had a golf game with us; we had not had one for a long time. During conversation, he intimidated that his wife was very savvy with this kind of things on the computer. It so happened that she was kind and patient to give us the necessary pointers and guidance; and after that Powerpoint shows is no longer a mystery, it is just something else to learn.

Have a nice day,
Ronald

Daniel

Hi,

A Story from the Bible

Long ago in Babylon, Joakim married Susanna who was very beautiful and God-fearing according to the law of Moses. Joakim was very rich and respected by the Jews and they had recourse to him. There were two elders who were appointed judges. These two judges also frequented the house of Joakim.

Susanna loved to walk in the garden in the afternoon. One day the two judges had not left with the people as usual. When they saw her they began to lust for her.

They turned their mind way from God and also neglected their just judgments, and each one was shameful to tell the other his trouble over his lustful desire. Day by day they watched eagerly for her. One day they left and parted, but both returned; they met, and so admitted their lust. Then they agreed to look for an occasion to meet her alone.

One day, Susanna decided to bathe in the garden; she sent her two maids to fetch oil and soap and to shut the garden doors. They did as she instructed and left by the side gate, all unaware that the judges were hidden inside. As soon as the maids had left, the two old men hurried to her. They said, "The garden doors are shut, and no one can see us; give in to our desire, and lie with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that you dismissed your maids because a young man was here with you."
Being trapped thus, Susanna had two choices, to yield and suffer shame and death or to refuse and fall into their cunning power. She decided that it was better to suffer without guilt than to sin before the Lord; Susanna shrieked.

Thereupon the two judges shouted and one of them ran and opened the garden doors. When the servants came to investigate they heard the judges accusations and were ashamed.

The next day, the two wicked old men came with the people before Joakim and declared their accusations, fully determined to put Susanna to death. When she was brought in she was veiled, but she looked very feminine and beautiful. They ordered her veil removed and feasted on her beauty. All this while her relatives and the onlookers were weeping, while Susanna through her tears looked up to heaven, for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly.

Then they laid their hands on her head and narrated, as they had threatened, her infidelity with a young man whom they were unable to apprehend. The assembly believed them, since they were elders and judges of the people, and they condemned Susanna to death.

But Susanna cried aloud, "O eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be; you know that they have testified falsely against me. Here I am about to die, though I have done none of the things with which these wicked men have charged me."

The Lord heard her prayer. As she was being led to execution, God stirred up the holy spirit of a young boy named Daniel, and he cried aloud, "I will have no part in the death of this woman." All the people turned and asked him, "What is this you are saying?" He stood in their midst and continued, "Are you such fools, O Israelites! To condemn a woman of Israel without examination and without clear evidence? Return to court, for they have testified falsely against her."

When they reassembled the elders said, "Come, sit with us and inform us, since God has given you the prestige of old age."

So Daniel requested for the two wicked men to be separated. He said to one, "How you have grown evil with age! Now have your past sins come to term, passing unjust sentences, condemning the innocent, and freeing the guilty, although the Lord says, 'The innocent and the just you shall not put to death.'
If you were a witness, tell me under what tree you saw them together."
"Under a mastic tree," he answered.
"Your fine lie has cost you your head," said Daniel, "for the angel of God shall receive the sentence from Him and split you in two."

When the other man was brought in Daniel said to him, "Offspring of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has subverted your conscience, this is how you acted with the daughters of Israel, and in their fear they yielded to you; but a daughter of Judah did not tolerate your wickedness. Now, then, tell me under what tree you surprised them together."
"Under an oak tree," he said.
"Your fine lie has cost you your head also," said Daniel, "for the angel of God waits with a sword to cut you in two so as to make an end of you both."

The whole assembly cried aloud, blessing God who saves those that hope in him. They rose up against the two judges, for by their own words Daniel had convicted them of perjury. And according to the law of Moses, they inflicted on them the penalty they had plotted to impose on Susanna; they put them to death. Innocent blood was thus spared that day.

And from that day onward Daniel was greatly esteemed by the people.

Circular stairway puzzle

Hi,

Having a good brain and uses it.

Once upon a time there was a very big poly sided gas tank in Singapore, somewhere in the Kallang basin area. It was said that it could hold one million cubic metres of gas.
Big tanks like that had to be maintained, and maintenance people had to climb up to the top by means of a vertical steel ladder. Climbing such a ladder was hazardous, so a peripheral stairway resembling a circular staircase around the tank was built instead. This was safer, allowing for rest, and not so tiring to climb.

There is another type of tank somewhat like that. It has a circular stairway which wounds around it exactly four times, such that the top of the stairway is directly above the bottom of the stairway.

An enthusiast wanted to find out the length of this stairway. Using instruments he calculated that the tank was 96 feet high and has a circumference of 78 feet. Having done that he sat down and did some more calculation, and then he declared that he had the answer.

Well, was he a genius, some wizard with special powers, or, has he really a way to determine it simply like that ? Or he was just smart ?

Have a nice day
Ronald

The answer:
The length of the inner side of the stairway
is approximately 326.5 feet.
The method:
View the tank as if it was two dimensional, split at a vertical line from the top of the stairway to its bottom. Thus, the view was four rectangles, with the hypotenuse being the stairway; and the answer was plain Mathematics using
Pythagoras theorem.
Length = 4 x sq.root of (24 x 24 plus 78 x 78).
The lesson:
There are different ways to look at a problem.

Goo Chiar Lenh

Hi,

Goo Chiar Lenh money or very low price ?

In Teochew dialect GooChiar means bullock cart, and Lenh means wheel; thus one knows how big a GooChiarLenh is.

In May 2005, when I showed some old friends my new watch telling them that it cost me only five dollars they asked with feigned sarcasm, "Your money bigger than GooChiarLenh, ah ?" This was in respect to the round copper one cent coin used during the British colonial times.

Well, the watch was digital, with large clear colourful LCD numbers and four buttons on both sides for operating the multifarious functions. It was not a Swatch nor a Baby G nor one of those expensive watches, but one which looks great and works great too; it is still accurate today. When it first came on the market it was selling for ten dollars, but the price has dropped to five dollars, and even three for ten dollars at some corners. So, was I pulling my friends' legs ? No, but indeed my money was Goo Chiar Lenh size.

In truth, this watch came from China. While my retirement reward Longines watch cost me eight dollars for a battery replacement, this watch costs less than the battery alone. Thus the vendors do not sell the batteries for these watches; they will replace the watch with another instead of the battery.

It is amazing how the Chinese can produce these watches at these prices. Is it because of their critical mass demand ? Considering their one point three million population and these being disposable watches which life span is that of the battery, it is hard to imagine that they can produce them fast enough. Surely their demand takes good care of their break even cost very easily.

Years ago, I was wondering how the cigarette lighter can be selling for thirty cents each, considering the gas, the flint, and all those parts in the whole unit. Now they are selling them ten for a dollar, or ten cents a piece. By calculation, if the factory produces a million a day and makes one cent each, the company makes ten thousand dollars profit daily. That was the reasoning my friend gave me, about how the cost can be that low, through economies of scale.

And now this quartz watch with its many parts and complicated mechanism sells for three dollars; one can also imagine the profit on a mass scale production basis to satisfy the demand.

These watches are easy to read, even at night, theft resistant, no maintenance, indifferent to careless use and hassle free. When the glass cover of my automatic Seiko watch was damaged, a replacement cost twelve dollars; with this watch I will just buy a new one.

There are many cases of golfers who drove frenetically and frantically back to the club house upon discovering while on their way home that they had left their Rolex watches in the shower room at the club. With watches like these they would not have to, just say goodbye to them instead.

Life's lessons

Hi,

Great lessons learned in life.

Lessons are learned from birth,
from anywhere,
from anything.
Some great ones
from the work place are:

What I know is important,

who I know may be more important.

There are many ways to say no to my superior,
one great way is not to say no at the outset.

I must know how to manage my subordinates
it is also beneficial to manage my superior.

Being smart is great,
but it must not be to my superior.

Being clever is not always good,
it pays to be stupid sometimes.

Harsh words have its way of coming back
with vengeful returns.

Making mistakes early in life
staves off bigger mistakes in the future.

Criticisms are mirrors to improve myself,
look for the
rose among the thorns

Non friendly people who communicate are of more value
than friendly ones who keep their distance.

When down and out can always pian cheah pian cheah
(bluff eat bluff eat) or cheat to survive.

What I do is very important,

how I do it is certainly more important.

Always wipe the slate clean on a new day.

Have a nice day,

Ronald

Being right

Good morning,

Winning to lose terribly ?

Being right gives one a very good feeling. It gives one satisfaction and enhances one's self esteem. It makes one confident with sure-footed ways and direction to stride forth in life. I too want to be right.

But alas, depending on the circumstances, being right may make one pay for it. Certain things seem to be in limited supply within a circle of people, like money. When one gets more of it the others will have less. So it is with ego, pride, satisfaction, self-esteem and other traits of human nature.

Being right and getting out of trouble together, and winning together, and succeeding together, is wonderful, the others will be thankful and praise us; there is common benefit; all will be well. Being right over others, especially our close ones, is an entirely different triumph; there is a price; we win and yet we lose somewhat which could be very costly.

Winning an argument is merely a battle of words, but paying the price for it can be very unpredictable, it could be sour, vengeful, bitter and lasting. Surprisingly, losing an argument is only a loss on the part of the gift of the gap, yet the ire or consequences can be very damaging. Some people can lose a pile of money in bets but not an argument. Calling an argument a debate may not always have a better result either.

Being right is better self-contained; there is no extra benefit asserting or claiming it. Right is right and wrong is wrong; and nothing can change the state of it.

Have a nice day,
Ronald

Any BODY story

Hi,
Hear this, hear this.

There were five people named Everybody,
Somebody, Anybody, Nobody, and Deadbody.

Deadbody was dead and has to be buried.

Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it,
as Anybody could do it easily, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because
Everybody thought that Somebody should do it.

But Nobody did it
since Everybody would not do it.

So Everybody blamed Somebody when
Nobody did what Anybody could have done it easily.

YouBODY, are you alright, reading this ?

The past is around

Hi,

Chess or dum, anyone ?

There is one nook in Toa Payoh Central which escaped my wandering until a few days ago. It is the north east corner opposite the Community club across Toa Payoh Central Road. There are no shops but a wide cemented walkway, cool and quiet. That afternoon there were several groups of elderly men, mostly standing and a few sitting on the floor.

They were playing dums on big homemade checkered boards, much bigger than the standard chessboard, and using painted over Chinese chess pieces. This enlarged game is more challenging and tactical. It used to be very popular with players who betted, including the bystanders among whom money changed hands. That scene was the same; I saw red and green currency, $10 and $5, notes being handed over after a game. It was quite nostalgic.

I stayed and watched for a while, may be fifteen minutes; their standard was quite good. It is difficult to say whether they were hustlers or not unless one observed them for a longer period. I guessed the players were around sixty years old, give and take five, while the spectators were about the same or slightly younger. They all looked skinny, hardy and healthy.

Some old fogeys do not fade away; they are still around, doing the same old thing, remaining mentally and physically active.

Any one of us like to take them on, for the fun of it, or check standards ?

Have a nice day,
Ronald

Holy Family

Hi,

Golden anniversaries, diamond anniversaries and .....

On 31 December 2006, a Sunday, Catholics celebrated the Feast of The Holy Family, the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. At the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Frankel Estate, Upper Changi Road, fifty five couples reaffirmed their marriage vows. Among them were four couples celebrating their post golden anniversaries, having stayed married for more thanfifty three, fifty four or fifty five years as they had done .

When the priest asked them about their trials and tribulations in married life extemporarily, their answers were slow in coming. It was very plain to see that these couples manage their marriage easily by deeds than by words. However their common answers were that when quarrels arise keep quiet. This was from people who stayed married come what may for over half a century. Certainly they had their fair share of problems, but more certain is that they have their ways to sail along on moonlight bay.

In the study of science there is an experiment on magnetism. Putting two bars of magnets together does not always give the same results. The two bars will stick together or move apart depending on how they are aligned, following the simple rule like poles repel, unlike poles attract. That is, the magnets will attach when their north and south poles are together, whereas they will repel when their like poles are near each other.

Putting two people together can have the analogous result like the magnets, but in a reverse way. Bring out their common likes they will share their lives; bring out issues that get them into conflict, what else can follow.

Magnets, magnets, inert you are with your power,
kindle your love, you are inseparable.
Magnets, magnets, with your latent fickleness,
change your state and none can bring you together.
