SBS service – A thought for consideration

Dear Editor,

Having been riding buses for some time, though infrequently as a retiree, I have an observation and suggestion which may be worthy of consideration.

The captains are never certain whether there are passengers to be picked up at the coming bus-stop, so they have to slow down and steer towards the bus bay every time, often wasting time and effort for nothing. This wastage can be avoided if there is an indication whether they have passengers to pick up or not before they have to slow down towards the bus bay.

My suggestion is that a sign be installed at the bus-stop, by which passengers can light up the service number of their choice by just pressing that number button; after that they can just wait without worrying to check whether their bus will stop.
This lighted number will tell the particular arriving bus captain whether he or she has to steer in and stop, or just drive straight by. The lighted number would be switched off when the bus takes off. The sign board naturally should cater for all the numbers of the buses that serve it.

Moving in and out of bus bays make stressful driving for the captains; they also have to keep their eyes focus on the people there to spot whether there were anyone raising their hand to flag. And braking hard to stop and revving up to take off are stressful for the buses and wasteful on fuel and costly on operation and maintenance, the brakes being the most vulnerable to wear and tear. The buses are huge and heavy vehicles and one gets a nervous feeling when they brake hard by towards the bus bay. This feeling is worse when the buses come by at a faster speed.  Sometimes the buses speed up to keep up with their schedule.

Safety, timeliness and cost-savings are the benefits of this suggestion.

Install signs at bus stops that light up commuters’ choice of service

As a retiree, I have ridden on buses for some time now. I would like to offer a suggestion, having made some observations as a bus rider.
Bus captains are sometimes not able to tell if there are commuters waiting for their service before they approach a bus stop.
And so, they have to slow down and steer into the bus bay. But this can be a waste of time if there are no commuters waiting for that service.
This can be avoided if there is a way for commuters to indicate to drivers that they are waiting for the service before the vehicles approach the bus stop.
I would like to suggest that bus stops have signs that will light up a service number when a commuter presses a button indicating his or her choice. With this idea, commuters can wait for a bus without worrying about missing it.
The signs would inform bus captains earlier whether they need to stop. The lit numbers can be designed to turn off after a bus has left a stop.
Bus captains have a stressful job of having to move in and out of bus bays while keeping an eye out for commuters flagging them down.
Braking hard at the last minute can be stressful on commuters and is also a waste of fuel. As brakes are vulnerable to wear and tear, they can also be costly to maintain.
